Superman #1 Facsimile

Last Wednesday DC released a golden age sized Superman #1 facsimile to match the golden age sized Action Comics #1 from a couple months ago. Of course this isn’t truly a facsimile” as they’ve made many changes to Superman #1 as I’ve noted on this blog many times.

Starting with the cover they’ve replaced 10¢ price tag with a #1. Don’t want to confuse customers as to the actual cost. Last facsimile they just removed the price tag altogether. This is a reasonable replacement and it’s better than removing it. Although technically this was a one-shot that wasn’t planned to be a series until it sold like hot cakes. It’s only called Superman #1 after the fact.

A more egregious change on something purported to be a facsimile is the gradient on the bottom. This was added with the gold foil Millenium Edition. We had the same issue with the previous facsimile.

The interiors are also the same as the aforementioned Millenium Edition. So not really a facsimile, but a recolored reprint. I am still glad to have it in golden age dimensions though. Not quite as big as my beloved Famous Firsts.

I know this isn’t a big deal for the target audience, but if they are printing period accurate size, they might as well print period accurate material.

a pile of Superman #1s

Update I neglected to mention the gold foil and blank cover variants that were released as well. I didn’t pick either of these up, but I am a sucker for a foil cover!

Update 2 I also neglected to mention I picked up an Italian printing from Panini in Florence and it also has the gradient.
